Innovation and inclusion: new accessibility app at the Museo del Calcio

Evermore dynamic and inclusive, the Museo del Calcio is pleased to announce its new app designed for visitors who are vision impaired, deaf or hard of hearing to ensure that everyone can access the rich collection that recounts over a century of Italian football history.

“It is an extraordinary result for the Museo del Calcio in Coverciano that is increasingly inclusive and accessible”, underlines the president of the Museo del Calcio Foundation, Matteo Marani, “Our aim is to break down barriers and make the passion of football accessible to all. This project has been achieved thanks to the fundamental help of the Fondazione CR di Firenze and I would like to express my heartfelt gratitude, on behalf of myself the the museum, to their president, Luigi Salvadori”.

Inclusion and innovation. Whilst at the Museo del Calcio in Coverciano, it will be possible for disabled visitors to relive the history of the Azzurri through the new app, ‘Museo del Calcio Open’, available on both iOS and Android. The new digital tool will create a new immersive way to connect with the exhibits, as well as allow people with special needs to have better access to the museum.

For those who are deaf or hard of hearing, it will be possible to scan each exhibit using the app to discover the Azzurri story behind it by watching a video featuring a sign language interpreter (available in LIS, Italian Sign Language).

For those who are blind or visually impaired, the app will feature a detailed audioguide that is automatically activated during the visit to the museum. This guide, thanks to beacon technology, will tell the story of each item in the museum and give detailed accessibility instructions for the duration of the visit.

The initiative has been achieved with the help of the Fondazione CR Firenze and the app, developed by R2A, has earned the Foundation a spot in the final nominees for the ‘Premio Luce! Startup Inclusiva’, an award that celebrates the “Italian businesses that have set themselves apart for their innovative projects and research in the field of social inclusion”.
