In Rome a meeting between the main players of the 'Combating Hate Speech in Sport' project to counter hate speech in sport

The meeting of stakeholders participating in the project 'Combating Hate Speech in Sport', co-funded by the European Union and the Council of Europe and implemented by the Council of Europe's Sport Division, took place at the headquarters of the Department for Sport of the Presidency of the Council of Ministers. The project provides support to public authorities in France, Germany, Greece, Italy, Montenegro, Spain and key sporting bodies in the development of comprehensive human rights strategies to prevent and combat hate speech in sport. Representing the football world are the FIGC, Lega Serie A and AIC.

The project comprises four phases:
- Presenting the situation regarding hate speech in sport, including the online dimension. After the drafting of a preliminary document by national leaders, stakeholders (public authorities, sports organisations and other key actors) are involved in collecting data, identifying gaps and opportunities, sharing examples of good practice, assessing needs and proposing ways to prevent and respond collectively and individually to hate incitement

- Provide guidance on adopting national strategies in partner countries to combat hate speech in sport by involving all key stakeholders.

- Design, implement and evaluate the #SportSpreadsRespect campaign, including training and creating tools to strengthen stakeholders' capacity in preventing and combating hate incitement in sport.

- Creation of an online resource centre providing relevant information on existing tools to combat hate speech in sport and identifying measures to prevent, counter, denounce and remedy hate speech in sport, in particular through the No Hate Speech Movement campaign, the Council of Europe's Gender Equality Strategy, the EPAS (Enlarged Partial Agreement on Sport) programme and other relevant instruments.

The meeting allowed the Italian stakeholders of the project to provide feedback on the draft of the prepared information document, offering the opportunity to the Administrations, Sports Institutions, Fans' Organisations and various other organisations affected by the phenomenon of hate speech in Italy to present their needs, reports and practices, creating a working network capable of integrating the collected points of view and preparing an information sheet presenting the state of play of the problem in Italy.
