Minister for Sport and Youth Affairs Andrea Abodi has signed a letter of support sent to UEFA for the Italian Football Federation's bid to hold the 2032 European Championship in Italy. In this letter, addressed to the highest continental body, Abodi confirmed that this prestigious European football tournament is considered an event of 'public interest and national relevance'. In providing 'full support' to the FIGC, the government has already declared its willingness to facilitate, within the month of March, the implementation of written guarantees from national and local authorities, as well as the definition of an institutional working group to coordinate activities at a national level.
Minister Abodi's letter will be attached to the documentation that the FIGC is finalising to send the Preliminary BID Dossier to UEFA, the deadline for which is set for 16 November and which is an intermediate step in the progress of working for the bid. Then, by March, the complete dossier must be presented, while the allocation (for 2032, Italy is competing with Turkey) is expected to be announced at the UEFA Executive Committee meeting in September 2023.
'The sustainable and lasting development of Italian sports infrastructures,' said the Minister for Sport and Youth, Andrea Abodi, 'is one of the priorities of the government's agenda in the field of sport. Italy's bid for Euro 2032 represents a fundamental factor in accelerating this development process, starting precisely from the stadium category, considering the sporting, social and economic role of football, but guaranteeing equal attention to the facilities of all sports venues. We will provide the necessary support to the FIGC and the municipal administrations of the cities that will be included in the candidacy dossier, on the assumption that we will be able to assess in advance the positive legacy that Euro 2032 will be able to leave in the areas involved, also in favour of the competitiveness of Italian football".
"This is great news for Italy," commented FIGC President Gabriele Gravina, "the hosting of Euro 2032 is a unique opportunity in terms of involvement and economic impact and will also be an extraordinary catalyst for the renovation of top-level sports facilities. I would like to thank Minister Abodi, with whom we are pleased to collaborate, and the entire government, which has confirmed how strategic this project is for the development of the country as a whole. We are working tirelessly to present a winning bid that is sustainable, has great international appeal, and is deeply rooted in the territory for legacy and development opportunities'.
