The Women's National Team will begin their qualifying journey for the 2023 Australia and New Zealand World Cup in Trieste. Stadio Nereo Rocco will host Italy’s first match in Group G, a game with Moldova on Friday 17 September (time to be decided), the same opponents who were beaten 5-0 in September 2017 in La Spezia in the first qualifying match for the World Cup in France, on the day of Milena Bertolini's debut in the Azzurre dugout.
Italy, who will also have to contend with Switzerland, Romania, Croatia, and Lithuania in their group, will play in Trieste for the first time in their history, while the match against Moldova will be the third confrontation between the two national teams after wins for Gama and company in the two qualifying games for the 2019 World Cup (5-0 in La Spezia, 3-1 in Vadul lui Voda). The first-placed teams in each of the nine groups will go directly into the finals of the World Cup, while the runners-up will compete in play-offs to fill the remaining two spots. Finally, another European nation will have the chance to qualify through the inter-confederal play-offs that will take place in Australia and New Zealand in Autumn 2022.
