The 2023/24 UEFA Women’s Nations League is a new competition that, just like in men’s international football, will accompany Euro and World Cup qualifying.
Participating teams have been divided into three leagues (A, B, C) based on their positions in the UEFA women's national team coefficient rankings. These were issued after the conclusion of the group stage of the UEFA European qualifying competition for the 2023 World Cup.
Italy are among the top 16 and thus in League A. The Azzurre have been placed in Group D alongside Spain (the new World Champions), Sweden (top of the FIFA Women’s ranking) and Switzerland, all of whom they’ll play home and away. League B features the national teams ranked between 17th and 32nd and League C consists of the sides ranked between 33rd and 52nd.
HOW IT WORKS.
The four League A group winners will qualify for the knockout finals, where the two finalists will qualify for the 2024 Women's Olympic Football Tournament, alongside hosts France. If the French reach the final, the third-placed team will fill the remaining slot at the Olympics. Furthermore, the top two teams in each group will remain in League A. The fourth-placed sides will be relegated, while the third-placed teams will be involved in a play-off tie (two legs) against a second-placed side from League B (whose group winners will be promoted to League A). The third-placed outfits from League A will be seeded for the draw and play their respective second-leg matches at home. The results obtained in the Nations League will be used to determine the leagues for the UEFA Women’s Euro 2025 qualifying competition.
