The 2-1 win against Albania was Italy's 100th victory at the European Championship, considering all 172 matches played across qualifiers and at Finals (100/50/22; 301/117 goals). Out of these 172 matches, Albania were the 42nd team faced, after meeting four times previously in friendlies (two wins in two matches) and World Cup qualifiers (2/2), with the clash in Dortmund the first encounter in the Finals across the World Cup, European Championship or Nations League.
Regarding the Finals of the European Championship, this is Italy's 22nd victory in 46 matches (22/18/6), winning 84 points out of a possible 138 available (60.86% of the total collected, 86.95 % in competitive games). It is a third opening-game success in a row at the European Championship for the Azzurri, after a 2-1 win against Belgium in 2016 and 3-0 against Turkey in 2021; the tenth match in a row with goals being scored in the tournament - the last time without scoring was on 22 June 2016 in Italy 0-1 Rep. of Ireland, which was also the last defeat suffered, a run of ten games (seven wins and three draws since then, with the fourth game in 2016 lost on penalties against Germany, the semi-final and the final won on penalties with Spain and England in 2021).
FASTEST GOALS: Bajrami's goal after 2 seconds was the fastest goal in tournament history and also the fastest conceded by Italy since 1910, when France's Lacombe scored after 38 seconds (Italy 2-1 France) on 2 June 1978 at the World Cup in Argentina. Also, Norway's Carew scored after 41 seconds in Italy vs. Norway on 04/09/2004, dropping to third on the podium in this ranking.
COMEBACK WINS: After almost two years, Italy return to coming from behind to win, and does so again against Albania: following Ismajli's goal in the 16th minute, a brace by Grifo and one from Di Lorenzo gave the Azzurri a 3-1 win in Tirana on 11/16/2022.
INTER BRACE: After 54 years, two Inter players scored at a Finals (European or World Cup): Barella and Bastoni against Albania, following Boninsegna and Burgnich in Italy vs. West Germany on 17 June 1970 in Mexico City in the World Cup semi-final. For Barella, who confirms himself as leading goalscorer in this squad (El Shaarawy and Chiesa with seven), this is his 10th goal for the national team, joining Carapellese, Cassano, Insigne and Zola. Instead, for Bastoni it is his second goal for the Azzurri, 94 km away and almost exactly two years after his first (14 June 2022 in Mönchengladbach, also in Germany, in a 5-2 loss to Germany in the Nations League group stages). It is a third header in the Spalletti era (a total of 20 goals scored, with 15% headers) after those by Immobile in Skopje and Darmian in Rome against North Macedonia; at the European Championship, a headed goal from the Azzurri comes twelve years after Mario Balotelli's header that broke the deadlock in the 2012 semi-final against Germany on 28 June 2012 in Warsaw (no header in the 2016 and 2020 tournaments).
APPEARANCES: As regards to appearances in the national team, captain Gianluigi Donnarumma leads the way, reaching 63 caps (the same Donadoni and Causio); Jorginho rises to 55 (alongside Benetti, Camoranesi, Marchisio and Verratti), Chiesa to 48 (like three world champions in Paolo Rossi, Grosso and Perrotta), Cristante to 41 (with Bagni and Materazzi), Di Lorenzo to 36 (like Mancini, Balotelli, De agostini, Parolo and Salvadore).
CALAFIORI: At 22 years and 27 days old, Ricardo Calafiori becomes the second youngest defender to play a match for the national team in the history of the European Championships after Paolo Maldini (19 years and 350 days) and ahead of Bastoni (22 years and 68 days), Baresi (22 years and 129 days) and Cabrini (22 years and 248 days).
