The Under-19 European Championships are fast approaching. Carmine Nunziata has called up 27 players to join preparations at 'Villaggio Azzurro' in Novarello, from 3 to 7 June. The majority of the squad was born in 2003, except for 5 players who are a year younger: the two Roma players, defender Filippo Missori and midfielder Giacomo Faticanti join the likes of Riccardo Stivanello, Bologna, Justin Kumi, Sassuolo winger and Juventus striker, Leonardo Cerri. There are debut Azzurrini call-ups for both Cerri and Cagliari attacking midfielder, Omar Isaias Delpupo (2005).
Three days later, on 10 June, the Azzurrini will meet again in Novarello for a pre-meeting that will bring forward the departure for Slovakia by a few days (Italy will be staying in Samorin, a town 25 km from Bratislava). The coach will use this time to cut down his squad and choose the 20 players who will participate in the tournament from 18 June to 1 July: Italy find themselves in Group A and will kick off their campaign on 18 June with Romania, on 21 they face Slovakia and on 24 June, France are the opposition in the last group stage match. The first two of each group will progress to the semi-finals which would mean the Azzurrini progress automatically to the Under-20 World Cup in Indonesia in 2023.
