Nations League draw in Nyon today

Today in Nyon at the UEFA Executive Committee, in which FIGC President Gabriele Gravina participated in, a new format for the Nations League, and for World Cup and Euro qualification, was agreed upon. Also decided was a new venue for the next European Super Cup in 2023, Slovakia being chosen as the hosts for the 2025 Under-21 European Championships, and the interruption of the 'Return to Play' protocol.
Regarding the Nations League, with the next edition kicking off in September 2024, a new two-legged knockout game will be played in March, creating a continuity between the end of the group phases in November and the Finals in June. This quarter-final stage will include the winners and runners-up of League A. The third-placed team in League A and the second-placed team in League B, likewise for League B and League C, will instead play a two-legged promotion/relegation play-off game.
The new format for UEFA EURO and FIFA World Cup qualification is to be further strengthened with twelve groups comprising of four or five teams. The countries placed into groups with five teams will start off their campaigns in March or June, if they are still involved the new quarter-final round of the Nations League or the promotion/relegation play-off game. Instead, countries drawn into a group with four teams will kick off in September. Group winners will qualify automatically for the Euros or World Cup, while the runners-up will go into the play-offs. No changes have been proposed for Euro 2024 in Germany, meaning there will once again be 24 teams involved. The new format will be implemented for the following, future editions.
The 2023 European Super Cup, originally planned to be staged in Kazan (Russia), will no be played at the Georgios Karaiskakis stadium in Athens on Wednesday 16 August, with kick-off set for 21:00 CEST. In the meeting, Slovakia was also chosen to host the 2025 U21 European Championships.
Following the evolution of the pandemic and the actual current, general situation, the UEFA Executive Committee has decided to suspend the application of the UEFA Return to Play protocol, although it will continue to pay close attention to developments. If there are any significant changes to circumstances then adequate measures to guarantee the safety and health of all interested parties and the running of competitions will once again be proposed and implemented.
