NAZIONALE: The “Spalletti Era”. 52 players called up pre European Championships

Luciano Spalletti has been at the helm of the Nazionale since 1 September 2023. The Azzurri coach, over the course of the last 8 months, has been in charge for 8 games, including 6 in European Championship qualification and two friendlies. His record so far reads 5 wins (3 in EQ, 2 friendlies), 2 draws and 1 defeat (all in EQ), with a total of 17 points from 24 available (average 2,12), a goal difference of +9, 17 scored (2,12 a game) and 8 conceded (1,00 per game). In 720’,  370’ (51,38%) were in the lead, level for 307’ (42,63%) and 33’ behind (4,58%).

The 5 goals scored against North Macedonia (5-2) in November are the highest in a single match, while the 4-0 against Malta remains the match with the best goal difference (+4).

Spalletti has called up 52 players, 36 of whom have played in the eight games. Barella and Raspadori with the most appearances (8 games), 7 games for Donnarumma, Dimarco and Frattesi. Bellanova (46’) was the least used among the 5 with 1 appearance (the others are Vicario, Gatti, Immobile and Tonali). Dimarco holds the record for most games as a sub (4 times), while Orsolini has been substituted the most (4 times in 4 games).

Juventus, Inter, and Lazio have supplied the most players to Spalletti (6 each). In total, players have been called up from 15 Italian clubs (after the top three, Roma with 5, Napoli and Atalanta with 4 each, Torino with 3, Bologna, Fiorentina, and Monza with 2 each, Hellas Verona, Genoa, AC Milan, Sassuolo, and Udinese with 1 each) and 6 foreign clubs, 5 from the Premier League (Tottenham 2, Arsenal, Aston Villa, Leeds, Newcastle 1 each) and 1 from Ligue 1 (PSG).

There have been 4 debutants during this period: Udogie (in October), and in March, Cambiaso (against Venezuela), Vicario, and Bellanova (against Ecuador). So far, 12 different players have scored (3 Frattesi, 2 Berardi, Chiesa, and Retegui, 1 Barella, Bonaventura, Darmian, El Shaarawy, Immobile, Pellegrini, Raspadori, and Scamacca). For Bonaventura and Scamacca, it was their first international goal. There is an ongoing streak of home match braces: Frattesi against Ukraine, Berardi against Malta, Chiesa against North Macedonia. Noteworthy are the 11 yellow cards (2 for Zaniolo and Mancini, 1 for Buongiorno, Di Lorenzo, Dimarco, Jorginho, Scalvini, Tonali, and Udogie).
