The origins of Italy's head coaches

Luciano Spalletti is the 21st man to take charge of the Italy National Team in its 113-year history. He is also the first to come from the metropolitan area of Florence, the city that has been home to the FIGC's Coverciano training centre since the 1950s. Until now, the only other Tuscan to be named Italy boss was Marcello Lippi, who was born in Lucca. Two other coaches are linked to Florence, with both Valcareggi (Trieste) and Prandelli (Brescia) choosing to make the city their home.

Tuscany is only fifth for the number of head coaches a single region has had. Leading the way are Friuli-Venezia-Giulia and Lombardy with five apieceValcareggi and Maldini come from the east of the region (Trieste), while Bearzot and Foni are from Udine and Zoff (the only World and European champion for Italy) is from Gorizia.

Our five former Lombard coaches are from five different provinces: Carcano from VareseMeazza from PaviaTrapattoni from MilanDonadoni from Bergamo, and Prandelli from Brescia.

Second place is shared by Piedmont (the two Alessandria natives Rangone and Ferrari, and Torinese Pozzo) and Emilia-Romagna (Bolognese FabbriVicini from Cesena and Sacchi from Ravenna).

Puglia (Conte), Liguria (Ventura) and Marche (Mancini) are next and came in chronological order, before Spalletti.

In terms of provinces, three lead the way with two coaches apiece: Alessandrio (Rangone and Ferrari), Trieste (Valcareggi and Maldini) and Udine (Foni and Bearzot). The other 15 have al had one, thirteen of which are in the north. The only coach from the South is Antonio Conte from Lecce, while Roberto Mancini (Ancona) is the only one from the midlands.
