In the headquarters of Coverciano, the work of the Italy Women's team continues in view of the eagerly awaited fixture against Spain. After yesterday's session, this morning the Azzurre were back on the field for tactical training against the Furie Rosse and in the late afternoon they will travel to Veneto. All the players are present and able to play except for Elisa Bartoli, who was forced to leave the training camp due to an injury to the flexors on the left thigh suffered two days ago in the match against Malta.
Tuesday at the Stadio Menti (18:15 CET, Rai 2), where the two teams have already faced each other 10 years ago, will see the third clash in little more than a year with the Spanish side, fresh from their victory in the first edition of the Nations League in which their only defeat came against Italy, who won 3-2 in Pontevedra on 1 December. That evening Sofia Cantore came on in the second half, crucially contributing the Italian team's comeback: ‘We had prepared for the match knowing that we were facing the reigning world champions and that we would have had to give a great performance. And that's how it went - we took full advantage of the opportunities we had and managed to put them in a difficult spot. Surely matches like that help us build our awareness.'
Whether it's with the Bianconeri or the Azzurre, Cantore is enjoying an extraordinary start to the season and on Friday against Malta she scored her first brace wearing the Italy shirt. ‘Scoring with this shirt is an indescribable emotion,’ she added. ’Clearly it was also a relief given that I struggled to find the goal in previous performances, but I had no such pressure because I have always tried to make my contribution regardless of the goals.'
The 25-year-old is counting on the support of the public, and together with her teammates will try to give another great performance to coach Andrea Soncin, who continues to work on the mentality of the team, ready to repeat the feat achieved just under a year ago. ‘We are preparing for the match with the utmost attention to every detail. The coach only asks us to have courage with the ball between our feet, he believes a lot in our qualities and encourages us to be ourselves regardless of the opponent we meet. We are ready and looking forward to the challenge.’
