More than just a win, a true triumph. Italy secured a first-ever win on Danish soil with a commanding 3-0 win, reaching six points and second place in the Nations League group. A dominant first half display set the tone for the match, with goals in the second half coming from Caruso, Di Guglielmo and Girelli.
A magical evening which gave the Azzurre the advantage in the direct clashes. The campaign will resume with the match against Sweden in Parma on 30 May, while the final game will take place in Wales on 3 June. The chance to finish in the top two positions in Group Four and stay in League A is becoming a true possibility. Soncin spoke after the match, "An exciting and unbelievable performance, I can't thank the girls enough for everything they're giving, especially those who came on. It is the demonstration of myself and the group, a true chemistry has been created in this group which allows us to produce these displays".
THE MATCH. The coach began with his usual 3-5-2 lineup but made four changes following the difficult night in Solna. For the first time in his tenure, Soncin was forced to do without Lenzini. Piga replaced her as she played between Di Guglielmo and Linari, on her third appearance for the team. Serturini played on the right wing and the partnership of Cantore and Piemonte was introduced up top. The midfield trio of Giugliano, Caruso and Severini remained unchanged. For Denmark, the key players from their first leg - Faerge, Holmgaard and Thomsen all featured, with Thomsen partnering Bruun and Harder up front.
Similar to four days ago, as the Azzurre wore the Green kit created by Adidas, the Women's Team started well as Cantore went close to opening the score. The Bianconera played a perfect cross to Piemonte 20 minute later, which was picked out by Faerge. The only chance for the home side came in the 38th minute with a shot-cross from Snerle which was deflected out for a corner by Giuliani.
The second half began with a chance for Cantore, who couldn't quite latch onto a corner from Serturini. In the following minutes Italy changed gears and scored the opener in the 58th minute through a Giugliano-Caruso combination: the Bayern midfielder played the Roma player in, she then back heeled the ball into the path of the 25 year old former Juve player, who slot it past Ostergaard. In the 71st minute, it seemed that Serturini had scored a second, but her effort was ruled offside. It didn't matter though, Italy dominated from that moment on. With eleven minutes to go, Di Guglielmo doubled the lead with a right-footed shot from the edge of the box which flew into the top corner. Her second goal was followed by Girelli's 56th goal for the national team with a brilliant volley using the outside of her foot, sealing the win in style. D'Auria made her debut late on in the match, rounding off a brilliant game, which was followed by the news that Sweden and Wales drew 1-1.
