Two generations of Azzurre together. Protagonists of the 'biggest sporting story that has never been spoken about', also known as 'COPA '71', the film that tells the story of the unofficial World Cup in 1971 in Mexico City, were present alongside players of today. Everyone together at the Festa del Cinema di Roma for the event 'Vincere insieme - storie di donne, sport e cinema', organised by Fandango with 'Gruppo FS'.
An opportunity to celebrate the champions of that time and revisit the film about the World Cup 53 years ago, a huge competition which was never recognised by any international federation. For the team that took part in the unforgettable competition the Goalkeeper Daniela Sogliani, Defender Elena Schiavo and striker Elisabetta Vignotto were in attendance, accompanied by Laura Giuliani, Elena Linari and Cristina Girelli - as well as Head of the Delegation Chiara Marchitelli and Head Coach Andrea Soncin. Same roles, different experiences, but united by a love for football and the Azzurri shirt.
"I never knew about this amazing story - said Chiara Marchitelli - it filled me with emotion and it's only right that we celebrate this story in the history of Italy's Women's Football side. They were the ones who laid the path out for the players today". Soncin also shared his thoughts straight after, also taken back by the story of Captain Schiavo and her teammates. "My task - the Head Coach underlined - is to find connections within the team, sharing emotions with the group that I'm in charge of. We watched the film together, for this reason exactly. They know they have a responsibility for the players of tomorrow and they show this day after day, on the pitch and off of it, also thanks to the example that has been set before them".
The testimonies from the three stars of the film were touching but at the same time very funny. Teams such as England, Argentina, Mexico, France and Denmark participated in the incredible competition alongside Italy. Sponsors, wide television courage, gadgets sold in every corner of the Stadium and around 100,000 spectators which transformed the football tournament into a worldwide event, which took place despite the lack of people remembering.
Anna Maria Morrone, representative of Organisation and People Development at FS, also attended the event and shed light on connections, team work and female empowerment during the event, alongside Cecilia D'Angelo, director of community direction for CONI. Other attendees included Domenico Procacci, producer and distributor at Fandango, as Deka Mohamed Osman, co-director of the film 'Non dirmi che hai paura', based on the life of Samia Yusuf Omar, Somalian athlete who ran for women's rights.
