The FIGC and the new head coach Luciano Spalletti have decided on the National team staff, who will meet for the first time at the Federal Technical Centre on 3 September, and at the same time thus start the new adventure on the path towards the European qualifiers for the UEFA EURO 2024 in Germany (on September 9 Italy play North Macedonia in Skopje and three days later will face Ukraine in Milan).
Alongside Spalletti there will be the two of his long-time collaborators, who have been with him since his managerial debut at Empoli (95/96), one on the bench and the other on the pitch: the assistant coach Marco Domenichini, born in 1958 in Spezia, has worked alongside the Certaldo coach for 26 years, following him from Empoli to Napoli, via Genoa (Sampdoria), Venice, Udine, Ancona, Udine again, Rome, St. Petersburg, Rome again, Milan (Inter) and Naples. Daniele Baldini, in the role of technical assistant. The 59-year-old Florentine was a cornerstone of Spalletti’s defence at Empoli, later joining his former coach as an assistant at Rome (2005); the latest arrival among the technical assistants, alongside the Coach since last season at Napoli, is Salvatore 'Sasà' Russo, born in 1971 in Salerno. Following a long career in Serie B and C (and a season in Serie A), he worked alongside Spalletti in 2000 at Ancona but also had experience at Empoli as deputy Martusciello in the 2014/15 season. Francesco Sinatti from Arezzo also joins as an athletic coach, who the year before, alongside Sarri, had started working in football at the 'Castellani', before following the 'Comandante' to Napoli, where two years ago he met the current head coach. Franco Ferrini also joins the staff as an athletic coach, with over twenty years of experience in the world of football and having already been part of Spalletti's staff at Inter.
Marco Savorani, the 58-year-old Roman, will join as a goalkeeping coach. He won one Scudetto Primavera with Roma in 1984 and spent many years between the sticks before beginning to coach. In 2016 and 2017 he won the prize for best goalkeeping coach whilst at Roma. After working with Conte for two years at Tottenham, from this season he will be part of Vincenzo Italiano’s staff at Fiorentina and will divide his time between the Viola and the National team.
Another former Empoli man is Alessandro Pane, a midfielder who established himself in Tuscany at the beginning of the 90s and has already spent two seasons with the Azzurri as an Under 19’s coach (2013/14 and 2014/15): he will take on the role of scout alongside Giorgio Venturin and Marco Scarpa. Finally, Marco Mannucci, who has been with Club Italia since 2016, and Renato Baldi will be the match analysts.
Leading the Azzurri Delegation, as already made official in recent weeks, will be Gianluigi Buffon, the record holder for appearances in the national team (176), whose final appearance was in March 2018 after the friendly match in Manchester against Argentina. On the other hand, Gabriele Oriali will not be part of the group. After 9 years as a team manager working alongside coaches Conte, Ventura and Mancini, he ends his time with the Azzurri.
The medical staff are confirmed as Angelo De Carli and Carmine Costabile. The physiotherapy staff will be Mauro Doimi, Fabio Sannino, Emanuele Randelli, Fabrizio Scalzi and Walter Martinelli), the nutritionist will be Matteo Pincella and the secretary, Emiliano Cozzi.
