"We should be content this evening”. Those are the words from Luciano Spalletti, who after admitting his disappointment following the draw in can now enjoy his first win as Head Coach, fully deserved and obtained by his players' technical and mental qualities. Even though a third and final goal didn't arrive, this time the Azzurri looked to search for it right until the end: “The team played some good football and controlled the game well. They had two chances in the first half and two breakaways in the second. I liked what I saw from my players, but we needed to find more quality to get the third and fourth goal.”
Spalletti has had just a few days to fit into the role of being Head Coach of Italy, with the pressure of needing to get points straight away for qualification to the Euros: “Now we can work more with more calmness. We have experienced around 20 days of full-on pressure and intensity in our heads. There were too many things to manage, even if I have incredible workers alongside me who have given me a hand. It's these games, this tension, that makes you stand up and realise what type of person you are and how you react to difficulties. These are the games where you have to get results at all costs and show who we are, mainly to ourselves."
Happy and full of pride to be in the Azzurri dugout (“it seems like I'm in Paradise surrounded by the Azzurri), the Head Coach repeated the importance of a sense of belonging to the shirt: “When you love something so much you need to share your time with it. Even if it's only ten days we need to dedicate our time to the National team, something that everyone must love."
Finally, a comment on the whistles towards Donnarumma: “We spoke about it yesterday. To demonstrate character, sometimes it's better to remain silent and go and work as hard as you can. If they whistled at him it means they have seen something they didn't like. Stay quiet and move forward to improve. I don't like those who react online with sentences. People must understand that they are dealing with professionals and not spoilt kids."
AZZURRI POST-MATCH REACTION. After scoring his first goal in June against the Netherlands, Davide Frattesi this time netted his first brace in his new home stadium: “Goals? The most important thing was to get a result.” The Inter midfielder hopes to have convinced Simone Inzaghi to trust him with a starting berth in the derby on Saturday: “It's normal that the coach makes certain choices; I still have lots of improvements to make and it's right that I'm not yet a regular starter for Inter, but this has helped me to give even more."
One year ago at San Siro, he earned the National team success over England with a winning goal that took Italy to the Final Four in the Nations League. Replacing Ciro Immobile in the starting eleven, this time around Giacomo Raspadori was not on the scoresheet, but contributed to the victory confirming his qualities as a striker. Only an outstanding save by the Ukranian goalkeeper stopped the joy of getting his sixth Azzurri goal: “We had several chances in both the first and second half to seal the game. We weren't able to clinch it earlier, but we gave a really good performance. We needed to show character and I think we did. It's a massive win." He had also a thank you message to the crowd: “The atmosphere here is always crazy, it's a privilege to play at such a stadium."
In his sixth appearance for the 19-year-old, Giorgio Scalvini already looke like a veteran, both on the pitch and at to the microphones: "There was some anger about not winning against North Macedonia, but today we showed the right spirit and mentality to turn the page immediately. Spalletti asked us in the centre to anticipate things and to cover.” With a particular attention to preventive marking: “They are important, not only to avoid counter-attacks but to also be able to attack immediately."
