Just over a month on from their victory over Wales and defeat to Denmark, Italy Women are ready to resume their Nations League journey in Scandinavia. On Friday 4 April (19:00 CEST), Andrea Soncin’s side will take to the pitch in Solna to face Sweden, who currently lead the group with four points. Then, on Tuesday 8 April (18:00 CEST), they will play their return fixture against the Danes in Herning.
The setback in the rain in La Spezia, which ended an eight-match unbeaten streak, has been largely processed, but the Azzurre now must avoid further missteps to prevent complicating their chase for one of the top two spots in Group 4, where they need to finish to ensure they stay in League A for the 2027 World Cup qualifiers. The Head Coach has named 29 players in his latest squad, which includes Genoa goalkeeper Camilla Forcinella, who has previously only participated in one training camp, and Cecilia Salvai, who hasn’t been involved since the 4-0 win over Finland last July (a result which secured Italy's qualification for EURO 2025). Alongside the Juventus defender, Lazio midfielder Flaminia Simonetti makes her return (having not worn the National Team jersey in almost two years), while Angelica Soffia, Eleonora Goldoni and Eva Schatzer have also been selected after missing out on the February camp. However, Barbara Bonansea will not be present: she is still sidelined due to a left thigh injury.
On Sunday, the Azzurre will gather at Coverciano, where they’ll spend three days training before flying to Stockhom in the afternoon of Wednesday 2 April. After taking to the pitch in Solna, where Italy played in 2003 and lost 5-0 (the Azzurre’s heaviest defeat since their World Cup defeat to the Swedes in 2023), the team will remain in Sweden for two days before heading to Herning on Sunday 6 April.
OPPONENTS. Soncin’s side are set to meet Sweden again for the first time since narrowly missing out on a big victory in Malmö in the first edition of the Nations League. That match finished 1-1 after Giacinti’s finish and Sembrant’s stoppage-time equaliser. The Scandinavians have won 16 of the 28 meetings between the sides, with Italy having recorded just four victories (the last one in 2017, which came away from home). The Azzurre also have four wins against Denmark (most recently at the Algarve Cup in 2022), who have won ten of the 19 previous encounters.
