Sergio Guenza, who coached the Women’s National Team in the 1980s and 1990s, has passed away

President Gabriele Gravina and the FIGC are deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Sergio Guenza and send their heartfelt condolences to his family.

Born on 9 January 1933, Guenza worked in women’s football over a long period once his playing days were over. He won four Scudetto titles and three Coppa Italia trophies as Coach of Lazio Women and was also in charge of the Women’s National Team from 1981 to 1984, and then from 1988 to 1992 and 1994 to 1997. While in the Azzurre dugout, he led the team during three European Championship campaigns (in 1991, 1993 and 1997), with Italy finishing fourth and losing two finals against Norway and Germany respectively. Guenza was also at the helm when the Azzurre reached the quarter-finals of the World Cup for the very first time in 1991.

“Guenza made a vital contribution to women’s football in Italy,” said FIGC President Gabriele Gravina. “His teachings inspired many of those currently in the game.” This sentiment was also expressed by Head Coach Milena Bertolini: “He’s the greatest coach we’ve had in women’s football: the National Team achieved their biggest results under his leadership. He taught football to so many players who have gone on to make history in our sport. The principles that he taught 30 years ago are still found in all courses today.”
