Over 92 million viewers tuned in to follow Italy's teams on TV and online in 2023
A record 107 matches were broadcast last yearMonday, January 8, 2024
A total of 107 matches involving the Italian national football, futsal and beach soccer teams were broadcast on TV and online throughout 2023, marking a record high and surpassing the previous year by twelve matches. The audience reached over 92 million viewers (92,148,318), a growth of six million compared to 2022. The peak in recent years remains 2021, the extraordinary year of victory at Wembley in the Euros, which garnered an annual audience of 221 million.
Several factors contributed to the increased visibility of Italy’s teams between 2022 and 2023. Significant was the fact that the Women's National Team and the U20 and U19 men's teams were all involved in final tournaments. Additionally, the FIGC's increased investment in productions for youth (both male and female) and futsal matches contributed to this growth.
Rai channels and the RaiPlay platform took the lead, broadcasting 63 matches (58% of the total matches aired), with a viewership of 90,987,327 (average share of 10.40%), representing 98.74% of the total 2023 audience. Within various channels, RaiSport led with 21 matches, followed by Rai 1 and Rai 2 (15 each), RaiPlay (eleven), and Rai 3 (one). The remaining 44 matches were broadcast on the figc.it website and the FIGC's YouTube channel, 18 more than in 2022 (a 69% increase).
The individual impact of the national teams varied. The majority of the audience naturally tuned in for the Azzurri, with ten matches watched by 65.7 million viewers on Rai 1 (an average share of 28.27%). The most-watched match was the decisive UEFA EURO 2024 qualifier, Ukraine 0-0 Italy, which was seen by 8.7 million people. The highest share was recorded when Italy faced North Macedonia away from home (39.60%), Spalletti’s first game in charge of the National Team after Mancini's summer resignation.
The U21 team concluded with 12.6 million viewers (12,615,286) and an average share of 9.57%. These numbers were largely driven by the three matches in the European U21 Championship, which unfortunately ended in the group stage. The team’s matches against France (Rai 1), Switzerland (Rai 2) and Norway (Rai 1) were watched by over 9 million fans; the average share of 20% peaked at 23.50% in the third match.
The Women's National Team, with nearly six million TV and online viewers (5,889,477) and an average share of 6.23% (14 matches aired), owed most of its success to the three World Cup matches played by the Azzurre in New Zealand in July and August. Although the time zone prevented reaching the record-breaking numbers of the 2019 World Cup (7.3 million for Italy vs. Brazil in the group stage and a 44.35% share for Italy vs. Netherlands in the quarter-finals), the three matches broadcast at 08:00 CEST (vs. Argentina and South Africa) and 09:30 CEST (vs. Sweden) on Rai 1 were viewed by over 2.6 million people, with a share of over 21%. The most-watched match was against Sweden (922,000 viewers), while the highest share was in the last match against South Africa, reaching 22.30%.
As mentioned, the 2023 spotlight also shone on the National Youth Teams, particularly the U20s, who finished runners-up at the World Cup in Argentina, and the U19s, who brought the European title back to Italy for the first time in 20 years. Considering teams from the U15 through to the U20 age groups, 33 matches were broadcast (17 on Rai channels, 16 on FIGC web channels), attracting over seven million fans (7,085,501).
The seven matches in the Under-20 World Cup were watched by 3.7 million viewers. The final, Italy vs. Uruguay (11 June, Rai 2), became the most-watched youth match of all time, with over 1.5 million viewers and a share of 16.57%. The five matches in the finals of the EURO U19 tournament were watched by 2.5 million viewers. The final, Italy vs. Portugal (16 July, Rai 3), ranked third in the all-time list of Italy youth matches, with 1.4 million viewers and a 10.85% share.
