At 24 years old, Matteo Gabbia seems to have truly taken flight. Two weeks ago, he scored a powerful header that secured a victory for AC Milan in the derby. It was an indescribable emotion for a boy who grew up in the Rossoneri youth academy and, after progressing through all the youth national teams, can now celebrate his first call-up to the senior national team: “I didn’t expect the call-up”, he admitted in an interview with Vivo Azzurro TV, “although I had hoped for it. Being here is a special feeling, and I’m very happy. I’ll try to enjoy this week by giving my all and understanding what the coach wants. Wearing the national team jersey is a source of pride and a great responsibility. t’s a shirt that must be honoured at all times”.
For the traditional initiation rite in the national team, he chose to sing “Sarà perché ti amo” by Ricchi e Poveri: “Singing isn’t one of my best qualities. I picked this song because they sing it at the stadium when Milan plays; it has a good rhythm, and I like it”. He shares his first experience in the national team with Di Gregorio, Pisilli, and Daniel Maldini. It’s worth noting that Daniel’s father was one of his childhood idols: “I alternated between defence and midfield. I really liked Paolo Maldini and Daniele De Rossi”.
As the only Milan player in the national squad, he also impressed Spalletti with the personality he displays on the pitch: “He knows how to command the defensive line,” said the coach. “He is very attentive and always maintains a high line.”
“The coach's words pleased me, they are a wonderful sign of esteem and trust. I’ve been getting to know Spalletti these days. I had only met him once at Milanello when he came to watch a training session. He was very cordial, and it’s enjoyable to talk with him; he made a great impression on me”. Now it’s his turn to make a good impression on the coach: “I didn’t think about my debut. I hope it comes in one of these two matches and that Italy can win”.
