He said it: “The moment has come to delight people.” Roberto Mancini kept his word. His team were spectacular, putting on a real show for Italians and kicking off their Euro 2020 campaign in the best way possible. This European Championship began in Rome, at the Stadio Olimpico. Unfortunately, the stadium was only at 25% capacity, but the Italian fans present were able to celebrate an own goal from Demiral and two other finishes from Immobile and Insigne as they helped drive the Azzurri to victory. “It was a good game,” said Italy’s Head Coach. “We need everything in these games and the crowd helped too. The team played really well. It was important that we got off to a good start here in Rome and it’s good for us and for all Italians. It was a great evening; I hope there are more to come.”
Italy’s ninth consecutive win is their most important in that run and could be good for them to progress: “We’re conscious of the fact that we have a great squad and that can improve. We have some young guys that have only been playing in Serie A for a few years. These games will be invaluable experience for them.” Even though Turkey weren’t at their best, the praise all belongs to Italy: “That wasn’t a bad team, they have some talented players.”
At the same stadium where he enjoyed an excellent season with Roma, Leonardo Spinazzola was once again impressive this evening. His man of the match award was recognition for someone who has become one of the best players in the world on the flank: “It was the perfect match: we scored three and didn’t concede,” said the Azzurri No.4 after the game. “We played some excellent football, and seeing fans in the stands was incredible.”
Feeling the warmth of a crowd only gives you more motivation, as confirmed by Leonardo Bonucci: “It's a different game when you’re surrounded by all these people. Now, let’s take the positives, cancel out any negatives and think about our next match. I hoped that the opening match would be like this, but this is just the first step on a long journey. We need to keep our feet on the ground and display great humility. The games are in close succession and the others will become increasingly familiar with us. But we’re aware that we can give anyone a game.”
