Italy to take part in the Algarve Cup, the prestigious Portuguese tournament kicks off on 4 March

Twelve years after their last participation, Italy return to the Algarve Cup, one of the most prestigious tournaments in women’s football which takes place between 4 and 11 March 2020 in the Algarve region in Portugal. Eight teams will take part in the 27th edition of the tournament which, alongside Milena Bertolini’s Azzurre, will see Portugal, Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Belgium, New Zealand and Germany all compete for the much desired trophy. Germany also make a big return to the tournament after four years of absence.

The draw for the competition will take place on 7 January with a new format for 2020: all eight national teams will face off in the quarter-finals on 4 March, with the winners moving on to the semi-finals on 7 March and the losers then competing for 5th to 8th place. The games to decide 3rd to 8th place will then be held on 10 March, with the tournament final on 11 March.

With Norway as the reigning champions after last year’s win over Poland in the final, the United States hold the best record in the tournament having won ten times, followed by Norway on five, Sweden on four and Germany with three Algarve Cup trophies to their name.
