After a 2-0 defeat to England on Thursday at St. George’s Park, Italy U19 bounced back with a 3-0 win in Katwijk over hosts the Netherlands. The Azzurrini recorded a richly deserved victory with all three goals coming from set pieces. Fiorentina striker Egharevba gave Italy the lead after just seven minutes as he headed home from Miretti’s free-kick and, at the end of the first half, the Azzurrini doubled their lead through Inter midfielder Cesare Casadei from another free-kick. In the 78th minute, Hellas defender Diego Coppola got his head on Nicolò Cavuoti’s free-kick for Italy’s third.
The Azzurrini’s second win of the season – following the 1-0 victory in a friendly against Albania in August – was a massive show of confidence for Carmine Nunziata’s side ahead of the first phase of U19 Euro qualifying in October as they take on hosts Slovenia, Iceland and Lithuania.
“We put in a good performance against England too, just didn’t get the result,” Nunziata said. “We played well today and also managed to get the win. We have areas to work on but we seem to be on the right track. Goals from dead-ball situations? We have some tall lads, who can time their jumps really well. It will be an important weapon in our arsenal for the Euro qualifiers.”
