Italy put three past Slovenia to earn first win of the season

After Tuesday's draw in Gradisca d'Isonzo, the Under 17s' first success of the season arrived today with a 3-0 victory over Slovenia in Ajdovscina, courtesy of Mattia Mosconi's brace (Inter) and one from Davide Atzeni (Fiorentina). "This is a team that has progressed well both in the Under 15s and 16s; it's a group consisting of high-quality players and that has been on show in these first two games," said Head Coach Massimiliano Favo. "The hot temperatures didn't help, but the lads did really well, creating lots of chances as they did two days ago: the difference today was we put them away. These two tests have allowed us to observe and assess a few players we knew less about, and to start off a big year ahead. The aim is to identify the core of the group and verify, in a short time, the most dependable and trustworthy to face the European qualifying group stages."

Mattia Mosconi

The game. Favo made eight changes from the side that started the game two days ago, with only Niccolò Gariani (Atalanta), Mosconi and Mattia Liberali (AC Milan) being called upon again. It was a good start for the Azzurrini who broke the deadlock after 17' through Mosconi, scoring past goalkeeper Maticic with his right from inside the eighteen-yard box, following Stefano Maiorana's assist (Fiorentina). It was the Inter striker again a few minutes before half-time that doubled Italy's lead, but this time with his left: a long ball in behind by Alessandro Di Nunzio (Roma) found Mosconi, who fired centrally to sting the hands of Maticic, but the Slovenian keeper couldn't keep it out. In the first 20 minutes after the break, Favo made several substitutions before Italy found their third after 66' through Atzeni, who did well to control the ball from Giacomo Arduini's hit from outside the area and stroke it home.

Matteo Cocchi (Inter) and Francesco Camarda (AC Milan) did not take part in the friendly as they were given permission to return to be available for their respective clubs. The Under 17s' next fixtures are scheduled for September when the Azzurrini, who host the first group phase of Euro qualification in October, are involved in a four-nations tournament in Germany with the host country, Denmark and Israel.
