Italy in Pot 1 in UEFA Nations League draw in Paris today

With just over a month before the friendlies in the United States against Venezuela and Ecuador, in preparation for this summer's European Championships Germany, Italy will soon learn who their opponents are for the newest European competition created in international football. Today, Thursday 8 February (18:00, live streaming on uefa.com), the Maison de la Mutualité in Paris - where the 48th UEFA Congress will be held this morning - will host the draw for the fourth edition of the UEFA Nations League, with the 54 national teams divided into four leagues based on their results of the previous edition.

FIGC president Gabriele Gravina, general secretary Marco Brunelli and national team head coach Luciano Spalletti will all be in attendance.

After reaching the Final Four last year, finishing in third place for the second consecutive edition following defeat in the semi-final against Spain and victory in the 3rd place final against the Netherlands, Italy will be in the League A draw in Pot 1 alongside the three other finalists from the 2022/23 Nations League (Spain, Croatia and the Netherlands).

League A Pots

Pot 1: Spain, Croatia, ITALY, the Netherlands
Pot 2: Denmark, Portugal, Belgium, Hungary
Pot 3: Switzerland, Germany, Poland, France
Pot 4: Israel, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Serbia, Scotland

THE NEW FORMULA. Four groups of four teams will be drawn out and each national team will play six matches (one at home and one away) against the three group opponents from September to November 2024. Compared to the last edition, which gave teams top of their group direct passage through to the Final Four, the first two in the group will go through to the quarter-finals (home and away) in March 2025. The winners of this tie will then seal their spot in the Finals, scheduled for June 2025 at the home of one of the four finalists. The fourth-placed team in the group will be relegated to League B, while - another new addition to the competition - the third-placed team will have to face a play-off game, to avoid relegation, against a second-placed team from League B.
