After qualifying for the World Cup Finals for the second consecutive time, following France 2019, the Women's team have climbed a place in the FIFA World Rankings, moving from 15th to 14th. Heading the rankings are the United States of America, while in second position is Sweden, leapfrogging Germany, who have moved down to third spot. Out of the top 15 spots, the biggest leap has been made by Spain, who go from 8th to 6th place.
The FIFA rankings announced today (the next updated version will be on 9 December) have also decided the groupings for the World Cup Finals draw, scheduled to be held on Saturday 22 October in Auckland. Italy have been placed in pot 2 along with Canada, the Netherlands, Brazil, Japan, Norway, China and South Korea. In the first pot, there are the United States, Sweden, Germany, England, France and Spain, as well as Australia and New Zealand, due to them hosting the tournament. Composing pot 3 is Denmark, Switzerland, Rep. of Ireland, Colombia, Argentina, Vietnam, Costa Rica and Jamaica. And finally in pot 4, there are Nigeria, the Philipines, South Africa, Morocco, Zambia, and three other teams from Chinese Taipei, Thailand, Senegal, Cameroon, Haiti, Panama, Chile, Paraguay, Papua New Guinea and Portugal, who will all compete in the confederation play-offs in New Zealand next February.
