With just under a month before the Azzurre kick off at the Euros in England the training camp ahead of the tournament is continuing in earnest. After two weeks in Appiano Gentile, Milena Bertolini’s girls today started a five-day training camp at Coverciano.
“The Federal Training Centre is our home,” Bertolini said in a press conference today. “And when you return home, you always get a positive feeling. With respect to these last two weeks, the type of work that we’ll be doing will be different, given that what we did in Appiano was more about getting miles in the legs. Our games at the Euros will be really intense and we are focusing on that, as well as on tactics that can make the difference in the difficult moments.”
Three summers ago, in 2019, Italy enchanted at the World Cup in France. “The World Cup is in the past now,” said the Azzurre head coach. “A lot has changed since then and the girls have more experience now. What links that World Cup and the upcoming Euros is the girls’ great enthusiasm and their dedication in every training session. A generational change is physiological, but it needs time. It’s important to back the young players because they are the future – Mancini believes this philosophy with the men’s team too. We’re looking to bring some young players through.”
taly play their first game at the tournament on 10 July in Rotherham against “one of the favourites for the tournament, France. If I could have chosen, I wouldn’t have wanted to take on France in the first game,” Bertolini admitted. “Belgium are a similar team to us, while Iceland are a really physical side. In order to get through the groups, we’ll need to put in three big performances.”
Tomorrow morning, the Azzurre’s training camp at Coverciano will continue with a significant moment as head coach Milena Bertolini – alongside Sara Gamar, Lisa Boattin and Francesca Durante – will be present at the Football Museum to meet some young players from the Under-12s at Fiorentina, Florentia San Gimignano and Aquila Montevarchi. They will share thoughts and memories of the Italy Women’s first team from the past, present and future. It will also coincide with the unveiling of a new exhibition at the Museum dedicated to the Azzurre, with a collection that will expand with the donation of a new item from former Italy player Antonella Carta.
