EURO 2025 qualification match-point for the Azzurre. Soncin: “There's great confidence”

Winning against Finland to secure qualification for EURO 2025 and celebrating this important milestone with the fans at the Druso in Bolzano: this is the mission of the Azzurre. Tomorrow at 19:00 CEST (live on Rai Sport), they will give their all in the final group match. Andrea Soncin's team, currently third, control their own destiny and with three points, they would secure a ticket to Switzerland, where the continental tournament will take place next year. Even if Norway loses to the Netherlands and a draw would suffice, Italy, missing the suspended Bonfantini, aims to avoid any calculations and deliver another outstanding performance.

We can't wait to play," declared the coach in a press conference. "I have great confidence in the quality and determination of the girls. It’s a very tough group, but we have the opportunity to qualify in our hands, and that's what we wanted". The 19 days spent together have flown by quickly because the group is more united than ever, and a nearly symbiotic relationship has developed with the staff. "It has been an unusual training camp, where everyone worked to create an ideal environment for the players. We are happy to be here. Bolzano, and Trentino Alto-Adige in general, have made us feel at home". Soncin then focused on the Scandinavian team, the only one to have beaten the Azzurre on their path to the European Championship: "Finland," he concluded, "is a modern team that occupies the field well. In the first leg, we made many technical errors; tomorrow, we need to do better."

Michela Cambiaghi, seated to the right of the coach, also responded to journalists' questions, starting with the April match in Helsinki, her last as a starter before an injury sidelined her for nearly three months, preventing her from participating in the double-header against Norway. “That day, our approach was right, but then we lost our way a bit,” noted the Inter forward. “Tomorrow, we need to start with great energy and be focused to secure the victory".

For the 28-year-old, who made her national team debut under Soncin, earning seven caps and scoring two goals, the first during the magical night against world champions Spain, the team's secret is their unity. "We try to carve out many moments for ourselves to strengthen the group even more. This is a crucial and not taken-for-granted factor that drives you and allows you to give everything in decisive moments, like tomorrow’s match".

Italy will pursue their thirteenth qualification for the EURO finals, supported by over 2,300 spectators, a number expected to grow as ticket sales will continue until kickoff. Tomorrow, tickets will be available for purchase starting at 16:00 CEST at the stadium box office located on Viale Trieste.

Before kickoff, there will be a minute of silence to remember Fabio Melillo, the Ternana Women’s coach who passed away on 6 July due to illness. Throughout his career, he won six Primavera titles (three with Res Roma and three with AS Roma) and developed many talents, such as Greggi and Caruso, who are determined to honour him with a win.

Group Standings.  To qualify directly for EURO 2025 and finish in the top two positions of Group 1, Italy must win or, if Norway loses their home match against the Netherlands, settle for a draw. A loss would see the Azzurre finish in fourth place, which would result in relegation to League B in the next edition of the Nations League (the top three teams will remain in League A). The third and fourth-place teams in the group will have the opportunity to qualify for the European Championship through playoffs, which will consist of two rounds, home and away matches, taking place from late October to early December.

PELOTA DE TRAPO. Tomorrow, at the end of the warm-up, the captains of both teams will exchange the "Pelota de Trapo," or "rag ball," as it is known in Argentine Spanish. This ball symbolises the educational project promoted worldwide by the Pontifical Foundation Scholas Occurrentes. Mentioned by Pope Francis during his audience with the Azzurri in 2019, it serves as a testament to the sport's "humble" origins. The "rag ball," which will kick off the match in Bolzano, comes directly from Naples, where it was made by the youth at the Nisida juvenile prison, just as it was during the friendly match in Bologna between Spalletti's Italy and Turkey on 4 June.
