Three days of hard work begin at Coverciano for group of 53 national team hopefuls

The three days of training that will involve 53 players of interest to the national set up begins today at Coverciano. Roberto Mancini and his coaching staff will evaluate the talent on show, with a view to expanding the pool of players from which they select their squad. This trial represents just the first stage of a path to men’s international football and was proposed by the leagues and clubs so as to facilitate the transition from the youth system to the senior national team.

At 12:30 CEST, the first group of 25 players, will meet up ahead of their first of two training sessions. Coming in to replace Paris Saint Germain goalkeeper Denis Franchi, who was forced to pull out of the group due to a wrist injury, is Reggina goalkeeper Stefano Turati. Pisa striker Lorenzo Lucca will also be unavailable, as he is due to feature in the first leg of the Serie B playoffs against Monza this Thursday. Giacomo Quagliata will come in, given that his club, Heracles Almelo, ended their season with relegation after their play out defeat in the Dutch league.

Tomorrow afternoon, it will be the other 28 players turn to show their skillsets, who will also have two training sessions. The new face to the group is Ibrahima Bamba, the Vitoria Guimaraes midfielder, who the coach decided to add to the squad list.
