adidas invites two design studios to create ball stand for UEFA EURO 2024
The European Championship, which starts on Friday evening, will have an artistic element: FUSSBALLLIEBE (love for football), the official ball, will arrive on the pitch on stands created thanks to the work of the Berlin-based multidisciplinary artist duo Gonzalez Haase AAS and the Dutch designer Sabine MarcelisThursday, June 13, 2024
adidas has broken new ground by inviting two cutting-edge European design studios, Gonzalez Haase AAS and Sabine Marcelis, to design the stands for the official ball of the 17th edition of UEFA EURO 2024TM, hosted by Germany from 14 June to 14 July 2024.
In a world like ours, trophies like the UEFA EURO 2024TM are essential for strengthening international ties, uniting players and spectators from different cultures and countries through love and mutual respect for football. This is the concept embodied by the Official UEFA EURO 2024TM ball, FUSSBALLLIEBE, which means "the love for football".
An emblem of passion, unity and devotion that crosses borders and cultures, FUSSBALLLIEBE celebrates the unity of Europe's diversity, embracing a universal language of emotions and identity founded on the UEFA EURO 2024 principles of simplicity, perspective, innovation and distinction. The stand, which serves as the platform for the official match ball - the FUSSBALLLIEBE - brings attention to this symbolism for players, match officials and spectators around the world. Taking the stand to an art element, FUSSBALLLIEBE is the focus, highlighting that we may have different ways of expression, but they are all part of the same game.
This concept resonates in the work of Berlin-based multidisciplinary artist duo, Gonzalez Haase AAS and Dutch designer Sabine Marcelis. This same concept therefore pushed adidas and UEFA to invite both to interpret FUSSBALLLIEBE through their unique perspectives and personal approach to materials. For the opening match of UEFA EURO 2024TM in Munich on 14 June, Gonzalez Haase AAS created a stand with 24 coloured aluminium panels representing each participating team. Seamlessly fusing architecture and design, the stand is a testament to Gonzalez Haase ASS' commitment to redrawing the boundaries between art and functionality. The harmonisation of the aluminium panels and the incorporation of the colours on the ball celebrate the joy of the FUSSBALLLIEBE and the unity of the teams it brings together. Gonzalez Haase AAS will also present special edition panels for the semi-final matches in Munich on 9 July and in Dortmund on 10 July, as well as the final in Berlin on 14 July.
Sabine Marcelis' stand design will raise the ball for all remaining group stage matches at Germany's ten host stadiums. Crafted from resin, the elegant sculpture blends minimalism with innovative structural elements, including a hollow interior to ensure lightness and transparency. Four versions of the stand, in red, green, blue or yellow, celebrate the identity of every host city. Marcelis parallels football's values of unity and teamwork with her artistic vision, infusing her work with her harmony and cohesion. Through her innovative approach, she invites viewers to contemplate the intersection of art, design and the developed environment, capturing the collective energy and passion ignited by FUSSBALLLIEBE.
