Vicenza is preparing for tomorrow's match against Spain by rallying around the Azzurre, who have received a warm welcome from the city since their arrival. This morning the team was received by the mayor Giacomo Possamai in the Sala degli Stucchi of Palazzo Trissino, the town hall, for an institutional meeting that was also attended by the vice-mayor Isabella Sala, the town councillor in charge of sports development projects Giacomo Bez and the AIC general manager Gianni Grazioli. Also present were delegations from LR Vicenza, Vicenza Calcio Femminile and Real Vicenza.
‘We are very happy to be able to host the match against the world champions,’ said the mayor. ‘Vicenza is a football town that has always been characterised by extraordinary fans. The Stadio Menti was the stadium of Paolo Rossi and Roberto Baggio and is considered a magical place for the people of Vicenza and beyond. I am sure that tomorrow there will be a lot of fans cheering for Italy: the push we want to give to these girls on the path towards the European Championship is strong. I thank the Federation for choosing to play here, where the women's movement is constantly growing and this is also thanks to the excellent results of the Azzurre.'
After the speech from Possamai, who received an Azzurri shirt with the number 10 as a gift, Coach Andrea Soncin and Head of Delegation Chiara Marchitelli also took the floor, saying they were honoured to be able to play such an important match in a city and in a facility that have made the history of Italian football.
Today's meeting was preceded by the impressive group photo in front of the Basilica Palladiana, one of the symbols of Vicenza, which is currently hosting ‘Sfumature di Azzurro’ (Shades of Blue), the exhibition that brings around Italy the memorabilia, usually present at Coverciano, that tell the history of the Italian national teams. Tomorrow at 10:00 CET a small delegation of the Italy Women's team, led by the president of the Professional Women's Serie A Division Federica Cappelletti and Chiara Marchitelli, will visit the mural dedicated to Paolo Rossi and immediately afterwards the exhibition at the Football Museum.
