A goal from Angela Caloia earns the Azzurrine a second successive win over Sweden
Sbadella’s side put in a solid performance out in Torre Annunziata: “It was an important result for our morale and self-esteem”Thursday, January 30, 2020
The Women’s Under-19 National Team recently secured their second win in three days by beating Sweden 1-0 at the Stadio Giraud in Torre Annunziata. It was Harvard University’s Angela Caloia who made the difference for the Azzurrine, having already scored a brace last Tuesday. This time around, she scored a fantastic goal in the 53rd minute, blasting a right-footed effort in just under the crossbar.
It was a fruitful test for Enrico Sbardella’s side as they continued their preparations for the upcoming Elite Round of the European Championship. This will take place from 7 to 13 April in Portugal, where the Azzurrine will face off against the hosts Bosnia and Herzegovina and the reigning European champions France. “I’m really pleased because today we met the true Sweden and the girls did brilliantly,” said the Head Coach. “They put in a solid performance, full of enthusiasm and character, played out in front of a great crowd.
“Over the past two games, we’ve had the chance to try and assess the fitness of all the girls ahead of our next matches in the Elite Round. I had some great responses and I’m delighted, also because these victories help boost morale and self-esteem. We dropped off a bit during the last 15 minutes, while Sweden improved. This nearly cost us as a result. However, the team responded well, demonstrating real character. This is what I wanted.”
