The Azzurre's departure for the 2023 World Cup in Australia and New Zealand is edging ever closer. This morning, the first week of training ended in Bruneck with a friendly against a local youth side. On Monday, players from Roma and Juventus will join up with the group in Trentino-Alto Adige after being granted permission for an extra period of rest following their participation in the Coppa Italia final.
Head Coach Milena Bertolini has selected a 32-player squad: 18 consist of those called up for the first camp, including Cernoia, Schatzer and Glionna, with the other Giallorosse and Bianconere players being added, following their exploits in three different competitions, that extended the season (Scudetto, Supercoppa for Roma, and Coppa Italia for Juventus). For four days, the players will train at the Sports Complex in Reischach, which was also used by the Azzurre in preparation for the 2019 World Cup, before moving to Ferrara, where the Azzurre will play a friendly against Morocco on Saturday 1 July (18:15 CEST, Stadio Paolo Mazza, live on Rai 2).
After the friendly, Milena Bertolini will further reduce her group, who will then meet back up in Rome on 4 July to leave for Auckland the day after, where the National team will play their opening game (24 July against Argentina). With the long flight and time difference acclimatisation done, the first training session is fixed for 8 July, two days before the 23-player squad must be officially handed in and confirmed to FIFA.
ITALY VS. MOROCCO, previous meetings: The Azzurre return to Ferrara nine months after a 2-0 win over Romania, which guaranteed their spot at the World Cup Finals. It's five wins out of five for the Women's National team in Ferrara spanning a ten-year period, from 2012 to 2022, with Bosnia, Belgium, Switzerland, the Netherlands and Romania all on the wrong side of victory. This will be the first time Italy and Morocco have officially faced each other.
