His goal a the 1974 World Cup is one of the most iconic and significant in the history of football. Jurgen Sparwasser is a name that means something to all football fans; he scored the only goal in the unrepeatable fixture between East and West Germany, played in Hamburg on 22 June, 40 years ago. Sparwasser, wearing the DDR shirt, decided the game with 13 minutes until the final whistle, becoming a true icon. Against his will, potentially, since he fled to West Germany in 1988.
For the first time in Italy, for the presentation of the book dedicated to him (‘L’eroe che tradì’ by Giovanni Tosco, Edizione Minerva), Sparwasser came to visit the symbolic home of our football, Coverciano and the Football Museum. Passing through the rooms full of artefacts of Italian football, he closely examined the trophies and shirts present. Finally, an obligatory photo, posing with the original East Germany shirt from the Football Museum archive: the number 10 shirt worn by Steinback for the friendly against the Azzurri in Udine in April 1981.
