The FIGC and its President Gabriele Gravina mourn the passing of Cesare Gussoni at 90. Starting his refereeing career in 1953, Gussoni officiated the first of his 106 Serie A games in 1966 before becoming an international referee and a director.
After being the Referee Designator for Serie C2 and Vice Commissioner of CAN A and B from 1981 to 1985, he worked for five years as the Referee Designator for Serie A and as a UEFA scout. In November 2006, Gussoni was also elected as the new President of AIA: a position he held until 2009. During his term, he was also elected Deputy Vice President of the FIGC.
Together with another former referee, Sergio Gonella, Gussoni was inducted into the Italian Football Hall of Fame in 2013.
FIGC President Gabriele Gravina: “We lose a real gentleman and great leader in Italian football. A unique style defined his life, he set himself apart in each of his roles for competence, sacrifice and passion.”
