The FIGC celebrates International Women’s Day

“Non è calcio femminile, è calcio” (“It’s not women’s football, football”). The comment from Azzurre Head Coach Andrea Soncin made in December 2023 after Italy beat Switzerland in the UEFA Women’s Nations League, was chosen by the FIGC to celebrate International Women’s Day and accompany an image of the Azzurre players celebrating in the new adidas shirt, the first designed specifically for the Women’s National Team.

The graphic published on the official website and social media channels of the Federation aims to underline the need for a real cultural and linguistic revolution, accompanying the growth of the women’s movement.

FIGC President, Gabriele Gravina: “The FIGC and the entire movement are committed to a profound and radical evolution process that spans our country in the field of rights and equal opportunity. Football can and wants to do it;’s part in contributing to making our society more modern and inclusive. The historic recognition of the professional status of female footballers and the continued investment in developing grassroots football for young girls represent key points in the federal mission, so that the principles that inspire a day like today are present throughout the year in an ever-more responsible and shared manner”.

MARCH 8 IN SERIE A AND SERIE B. International Women’s Day will be celebrated in the Women’s Serie A by raising awareness about digital gendered violence, an issue - through sexist and degrading comments - which continues to be all too common, especially on social networks. Before four Serie A games (two in the Championship Round and two in the Relegation Round), the captains and refereeing team will take a photo with a dedicated sign for the occasion, containing some of the negative comments made online which have a real impact on women’s lives, and in this case, the footballer’s who received them. The initiative, which joins the #MAIPIÙ hashtag, the permanent institutional campaign against gendered violence started in September 2023, will also be promoted via a reading by the announcers in the Women’s Serie A and Serie B grounds ahead of the games this weekend.
