Gravina to 'Radio anch'io sport':

"The concept of reform requires willingness to change and changing requires discussion, participation and courage". Thus, FIGC president, Gabriele Gravina, spoke to 'Radio anch'io sport', broadcast on Rai Radio 1. "I am firmly convinced that Italian football is finally carrying out an in-depth analysis of what needs to change to improve sustainability and competitiveness. The discussions and frenzy from the last few days are positive; it means that the shock given by the calling of the assembly has already woken up a few big players in our world. Italian football demands a reform, not Gabriele Gravina, therefore we are called to give an answer in terms of positive evolution". An assembly had been scheduled for 11 March but it has been postponed: "Let's put aside the issies on which we differ, but concentrate all together on finding agreement on economic-financial reforms".

On the outcome of the discussion with federal members: "I don't want to be overly optimistic but football needs to get its act together and it seems to me that we are all in agreement on this. Before we innovate, we need to restore (the Clubs' budgets bring excessive debts and poor capitalisation) and get away from the single idea of the 20 or 18 teams that block the system: these are linked to inaction and opposition which, although understandable, are not yet shared". In recent days, Gravina welcomed representatives from some Serie A clubs at the FIGC, "because the Federation is everyone's home. The clogged up fixture list is an important issue, which affects all of Italian football: sooner or later we'll have to review the format anyway. Germany has already done it, France will do it from the 2024/25 season, but I hope that this will happen with self-determination of the individual components, starting from Serie A".

The FIGC president then addressed the topic of refereeing: "The Italian referees represent an excellence recognised at an international level. Regardless of some false and opportunistic stories, the margin of error this season is close to zero, therefore the evaluation on the work of the referees is positive. Added to this is how Rocchi is helping a very young team grow and how he has started a valuable process of transparency and communication with which to explain both the rules and the referees' decisions, despite the divisions and pressures that come both externally and internally. But if Italian referees have now developed antibodies to the former, one never gets used to the latter, so much so that they risk undermining the calmness needed to referee and maintain high levels, leaving the referees who go on the field calm. We should refrain from continuous personal claims and political ambitions within the AIA".

2024 is the year of the European Championships in Germany: "We want to prepare ourselves as best we can, our goal is to continue to excite Italians: results are important, but performances are even more important. Spalletti is doing a great job of stimulating all the potential squad players; he is touring all the club's headquarters to see the training sessions and talk to them: he is already creating the group even without being with them regularly. Our HQ will be in Iserlohn, where we will be welcomed by many of our compatriots who transmit enthusiasm to our athletes. In March, we will instead be awaited by a very stimulating experience. The Italian national football team returns to play in the United States after 19 years. This represents an honour and a great opportunity because it will allow us to strengthen the relationship with the large Italian community and, at the same time, create new reasons of interest around football and 'Made in Italy', of which the Azzurri shirt is one of the most appreciated symbols abroad".
