La FIGC piange la scomparsa di Papa Francesco. Gravina:

Football and the FIGC are in mourning upon the death of Pope Francis, who passed away this morning at the age of 77.

“Even with a rag ball, you can work miracles.” Those were the words of Jorge Mario Bergoglio, who was born in Argentina on 17 December 1936, during a private audience with the Italy national team in 2019 as he discussed his passion for the game. This ‘pelota de trapo’ also inspired various initiatives that connected football and the FIGC with the Church. The most recent of these projects with the ‘Giunileo-Pelota de Trapo’ and the sporting jubilee celebrations, which were to culminate in an event presided over by His Holiness at Piazza San Pietro on 14 and 15 June.

“Italian football joins the mourning of millions of people upon the painful passing of His Holiness Pope Francis,” said FIGC President Gabriele Gravina. “He was a great example of Christian charity and dignity in times of strife. He always took an interest in sport and football in particular, as he was a great fan of the game. His humanity, spirituality, and awareness of illness, poverty, and persecution throughout the world will be his greatest legacy, a shining light that will guide future generations. He will always be in the hearts of the faithful and of lovers of the game of football.

The FIGC, in agreement with all footballing bodies, can confirm the suspension of all domestic football to be played today, from Serie A to amateur.
