‘Fai il tifo per te’: FIGC’s initiative for National Eating Disorders Awareness Day

‘Fai il tifo per te’ (support yourself), is the initiative’s motto, promoted by FIGC for National Eating Disorders Awareness Day, which is celebrated on 15 March to make people aware of an ever-growing phenomenon. In the campaign graphic posted on the site and on the Federation’s socials, the Women’s National team players are organised around the Lilac Ribbon, the symbol of the fight against anorexia, bulimia and other eating disorders.

These issues are more apparent than ever, for both men and women. More and more people suffer from eating disorders, especially young people. Although these are not official statistics, there is an estimated figure of 3.5 million Italians who suffer from an eating disorder, a growing trend confirmed by Bambino Gesù Pediatric Hospital’s data which shows not only an increase in cases, but also in the severity of them, particularly amongst younger patients. Women certainly suffer the most, with up to nine times more cases than men.

Other than this campaign, FIGC have organised a meeting at Covericano with the Azzurre and some patients that have been treated by the department of child neuropsychiatry at Meyer Children's Hospital in Florence. On 22 February last year, the girls got to spend a morning in the company of Andrea Soncin's team at the Federal Training Centre alongside Meyer Foundation Secretary General, Alessandro Benedetti, and Dr. Elisabetta Innocenti.
