In the thirteenth edition of the ReportCalcio, now published on the FIGC website, the growth of the women’s football movement in Italy was analysed. On a sporting level, between 2008 and 2022, the number of female footballers registered with the FIGC almost doubled, going from 18,854 to 36,552 (with an increase of around 10,000 in the last year and a growth of approximately 9,000 compared to the pre-pandemic survey), whilst in terms of the fan base, there is an estimated 10.2 million fans of women’s football in Italy; it is predicted that this will increase by 2.2 times by 2033, to 22.6 million. In the same period, the commercial value of women’s football in Italy could grow by 7.1 times, from EUR 6.6 million in 2021 to 46.7 in 2033.
An important boost to the growth of the movement is connected to the major football events in which the women's national team has participated and to those at club level hosted in our country; the UEFA Women's Champions League Final 2022 (May 2022 - Juventus Stadium) has helped to produce, for example, a 40% increase in registered female footballers (5-15 years old) and a 50% increase in female coaches in Piedmont.
Furthermore, the FIGC has become the first Italian sporting federation to introduce female professionalism in Serie A from 2022/23, further evidence of the significant growth of women’s football’s sporting, commercial and media profile; the TV audience for the 2021/22 Serie A grew 142% from the previous season, thanks in part to the broadcast on free TV (La7). This was followed by a further increase of 7% in the 2022/23 season. The final of the 2022 Supercoppa (Juventus-Milan) was watched by 352,000 people, a record in women’s club football in Italy.
In 2021/22, there was a 38% increase in the TV rights revenue of the FIGC Women's Football Division compared to the 19/20-20/21 rights cycle. With respect to commercial agreements between 2020/21 and 2021/22, there was a 30% increase in the value of sponsorships. A more recent record with respect to turnout at stadiums: Roma-Barcelona (UEFA Women’s Champions League match played at the Olimpico on 21 March 2023) saw 39,454 spectators, the highest attendance of any match in the history of women’s football in Italy.
The ReportCalcio also contains an analysis of the international context that certifies the growth of the movement on a sporting, media and commercial level.
