HOME MATCH IN MILAN. The national team will return to play in Milan a little more than a year after the success against Ukraine (2-1 with Frattesi's double) in a qualifier for EURO 2024. It was in Milan that Italy played the first match in its history against France on 15 May 1910, at the Arena Civica, beating les Bleus 6-2. Milan also baptised the birth of the Azzurro legend, as on 6 January 1911 against Hungary, Italy wore the Azzurri shirt for the first time. The second city behind Rome to have hosted the largest number of home matches for Italy (61, 39 wins, 19 draws and 3 defeats), as well as being the seat of the Italian Football Federation between 1905 and 1911, Milan has seen Italy play in four different venues: the Arena Civica, the Velodromo Sempione (demolished in 1928), the Campo Milan in Viale Lombardia and San Siro, named after Giuseppe Meazza since 3 March 1980. In the capital of Lombardy, the Azzurri had maintained an unbeaten run of almost a century, 96 years exactly: from the 1-2 defeat in January 1925 against Hungary (at the Campo Milan, while in 1911 the other defeat against the Hungarians happened at the Arena Civica) to the 1-2 defeat in October 2021 against Spain at the Meazza. The biggest win for the Italy in Milan is Italy 9-4 France on 18 January 1920, while Austria is the most frequently faced opponent (6 times), followed by Sweden, Switzerland, Hungary and Portugal (5).
