Fabio Capello was born on 18 June 1946 in Pieris in the province of Gorizia. He would go on to play an important role in many moments of Italian football history. Capello made his Serie A debut before the age of 18 for SPAL but he took a big step up at the age of 21 when he joined Helenio Herrera’s Roma, the side where he would win the Coppa Italia.
At Juventus, he won the Scudetto three times before joining AC Milan where Capello won a fourth league title and a second Coppa Italia. His Italy debut came when he was a Juventus player, in the match against Belgium when the Azzurri were eliminated from the 1972 European Championship. Although he never won an international title, he made history with his goal against England in 1973 in Turin which sealed the Azzurri’s first win over the Three Lions before he scored the winner at Wembley five months later as Italy won on English soil for the first time.
Capello also had a good record against Brazil, with two of his eight Italy goals coming against the South Americans. Overall, he made 32 appearances for the Azzurri.
