Domenico Berardi was born on 1 August 1994 in Cariati, a small town in the province of Cosenza, Calabria. A pure footballing talent, he was scouted by Sassuolo at the age of 16 from Cosenza's youth academy. At the age of 18, he contributed to the club's promotion to Serie A, where he made his debut a year later, on 25 September 2013. Despite his young age, on 12 January 2014 he scored four goals against AC Milan, becoming the second youngest player (after Silvio Piola) to score four goals in a Serie A match. He has scored 105 goals in 291 appearances with the Black and Green club, reaching a historic qualification for the 2016/17 Europa League.
For the National Team, after a brief appearance for the Under-19s, he made his debut with the Under-21s on 4 June 2014 in the friendly against Montenegro, and scored his first goal on 5 September against Serbia. For the senior team, his first call-up came in October 2015 from Coach Conte, but it was under Roberto Mancini when he made his debut, on 1 June 2018 in a friendly against France. His first goal came on 7 October 2020, in a friendly won 6-0 against Moldova in Florence. In the following November he scored two big goals against Poland and Bosnia Herzegovina, making a large contribution to the qualification to the Nations League semi-finals. He was called up for the final phase of EURO 2020, making 6 appearances, including the Wembley final, when the Azzurri became European Champions after penalties; Berardi even scored the first one. He has now made 17 appearances and scored 5 goals for the National Team.
