Federico Chiesa was born in Genoa on 25 October 1997 and followed in his father’s footsteps in becoming a professional footballer. He primarily plays as a winger and his physical and technical abilities make him a real challenge for any defender who comes up against him in a one-on-one. He featured for Fiorentina’s youth teams before making his debut for the first team in the 2016/2017 season. His first match was an emotional fixture against Juventus and he immediately showed glimpses of his potential. He scored his first ever senior goal on 8 December 2016 against Quarabag in the Europa League. He further consolidated his position in the team in the 2017/18 season: he made 42 appearances and scored twelve goals which made him a highly sought-after individual in the summer transfer window. However the purchase of the club by the Italian-American Commission convinced him to remain at the club where he has already become a staple of the team with more than 100 appearances already under his belt.
After a few appearances for the Under-19s and Under-20s, he was called up to Di Biagio’s Under-21 National Team in March 2017. He was a part of a generation of young Italian talents making a big impression and he first featured for the senior National Team under Coach Ventura in a friendly against San Marino on 31 May 2017. He then proceeded to take part in the European Under-21 Championship. He also received his first official call-up to the senior team from Di Biagio, and he made his debut on 28 March 2018 in a friendly against Argentina. He has recieved further caps under Roberto Mancini and he already has 16 appearances for the Azzurri.
