Happy birthday to Dino Baggio, who turns 49 today!

On the 24 July 1971, Dino Baggio was born in Camposampiero, in the province of Padova, and he grew up to be one of the best Italian midfielders of the 1990s, just as effective in defence as he was in attack.

After spending his early career with Torino, who gave him his debut at just 19 years old, he established himself as a true champion with Juventus, scoring three goals in double final of the UEFA Cup final, played over two legs against Borussia Dortmund. The UEFA Cup was the competition that played a central role in his career: other than his first win with the Bianconeri, Baggio won another two with Parma. He also won a Coppa Italia and a Supercoppa Italiana with the Crociati.

Baggio's international career started in style, playing a key role in the Italy side which won the Under-21 European Championship under the guidance of Cesare Maldini. At just 20 years of age, he was called up to the senior side by Arrigo Sacchi, starting a match against Cyprus in Qualification for the 1992 European Championship. Baggio contributed to Italy’s qualification to the 1994 World Cup, where the Azzurri finished as runners-up, after a defeat on penalties in the final against Brasil. He also featured at Euro 1996 and in the 1998 World Cup, before finishing his international career in a friendly against Belgium in 1999, with more than 60 appearances for his country.
