The statistical challenge of Serie A matchday 28: Alessio Romagnoli vs. Gianluca Mancini

It’s AC Milan vs. Roma on Sunday afternoon at San Siro for matchday 28 in Serie A: one of Italian football’s classic encounters. The match is one of the last chances for the Rossoneri to catch the European train, whilst it could be confirmation of the Giallorossi’s qualification after Fonseca’s team have won three in a row. Alessio Romagnoli and Gianluca Mancini, two young Azzurri defenders, are already solid pillars for their clubs as well as for Mancini’s national team where they’re firmly part of the squad.

Romagnoli, who grew up in Roma’s youth team, has played all 27 league games so far, amassing a total of 2,430 minutes. Meanwhile, Mancini has played 23 times, once as a sub, for a total of 1,977 minutes.

They both boast similar numbers when it comes to defensive statistics. Romagnoli has won 22 tackles with a 53.7% success rate, while Mancini has won 19 with a 51.4% success rate. The Rossoneri player has also made more clearances, 128 to Mancini’s 74, as well as shots blocked 14 to 11, whilst the interceptions count is neck and neck, Romagnoli’s 47 just pips Mancini’s 44. Out of the two, Mancini has committed the most fouls, in part due to his stint playing as a holding midfielder in front of the defence, with a total of 45 fouls, ten yellow cards and one red, meanwhile Romagnoli has committed 35 fouls and been cautioned four times.

AC Milan’s stalwart has always shone for his innate ability to distribute the ball and build play from the back, as shown by his 1,423 successful passes with an incredible 90.5% pass accuracy, and an 84.5% pass accuracy for passes directed into the opposition’s half. Meanwhile Mancini has made 1,117 successful passes with an accuracy of 88.4% (80% accuracy when looking at passes into the opposition’s half). However, the dribbling stats are truly in Mancini’s favour, 10 to 1 successful dribbles.

Only Mancini has found the net this season with one of his three shots on target. While neither player has managed to provide an assist, despite Romagnoli creating nine chances and Mancini eight.
