The Final Eight of the Champions League and Europa League set to begin with Verratti’s PSG up against Atalanta
Barella, D'Ambrosio, Gagliardini, Bastoni and Candreva all preparing to face Bayer Leverkusen this eveningSunday, August 9, 2020
With European competitions back underway last week, the next few days will see more knockout games take place on the big stage, with the grand finales for both competitions coming at the end of the month (Europa League final on 21 August in Cologne, Champions League final on 23 August in Lisbon).
Inter remain the only representative of Serie A still in the running for the second continental trophy, which is also taking place this month in the same format as the Champions League. Former Italy Coach Conte’s Nerazzurri have already seen off Spanish side Getafe with a 2-0 win, and are now putting in the final preparations to face Bayer Leverkusen in Düsseldorf this evening. Bastoni has played a key role in the Salento coach’s back line with Barella and Gagliardini also frequent starters alongside Brozovic in midfield. Italy wide-man D'Ambrosio often lines up on the right, with Candreva also another option for Coach Conte in the wing-back position off the bench. Should Inter win tonight’s quarter-final, they will meet either Shakhtar Donetsk or Basel in the semi-finals.
Looking at the Champions League, it will be Gasperini’s Atalanta representing Italy in Lisbon, as they prepare to line up against Verratti’s PSG on Wednesday, one of the tournament favourites to reach the final. The injured Gollini will be replaced by Sportiello, while Caldara and Palomino will both be hoping for a starting spot in the back three. The Parisians will have their fingers crossed to have both Verratti and Mbappe back in time for the game, with both players named in Tuchel’s squad of 28.
