Italians in Serie A: Statistics favour Mattia Destro on Matchday 6
The Genoa forward is the best Italian player from the latest league matchday according to the Opta IndexTuesday, September 28, 2021
When Genoa face difficulty, Mattia Destro always rises to the fore. The Grifone striker is the best Italian player from matchday six of Serie A, after recording a very high Opta Index. An all-around performance for him against Verona, well beyond his two goals scored in the second half. In the 3-3 at the Ferraris, as well as scoring an incredible goal while holding a bottle of water in his hand, Destro dragged his Genoa side to an almost epic comeback (from 0-2 to 3-2), only to then be clawed back by Kalinic's late goal. Destro scored two goals with his only two shots on target and won four out of five aerial duels (80%), confirming his aerial prowess. The Ligurian forward has scored four of his last five goals in Serie A with his head, after scoring his previous seven with his right foot.
The supporting evidence for the best of the round is enhanced by two statistics that testify to his good start to the championship. Mattia Destro has scored four goals in the first six Serie A matches for the first time in his career and, since Davide Ballardini returned to the Genoa dugout (21 December 2020), he has scored 12 goals in 23 Serie A appearances, as many as in his previous 57 matches played in the competition for Genoa and Bologna. His exploits against Verona follow impressive performances against Bologna and Cagliari: Four goals in the last four appearances for the striker.
