Italians in Serie A: Mattia Zaccagni stands out on matchday 25

Mattia Zaccagni was the best Italian player on matchday 25 of Serie A according to data provided by Opta. The winger starred as Lazio beat Bologna 3-0 at the Dall’Ara. He won the penalty for Immobile’s opener before bagging only his second brace in Serie A as he moved to six league goals in 19 appearances this season, his best-ever record in the Italian top flight.

The brace against the Rossoblù was his second two-goal haul in a top-flight match after that, which he recorded against Sassuolo back in August as a Verona player. Furthermore, the Biancocelesti winger recorded another stat, becoming the third player this season to both win a penalty and score a brace in the same match Serie A; one was Pinamonti against Salernitana in October and the other was actually Zaccagni as well, as he scored against Sassuolo in the 71st minute before converting the penalty that he had won at the death.

Zaccagni scored twice against Mihajlovic’s side with his two shots attempted; he also made two interceptions (team-high and second only Soumaoro in general) and made two crosses (fewer only than Lazzari for the Biancocelesti).

Six of Zaccagni’s last seven Serie A goals have come at home and eight of his last nine have been scored in the second half. The only exception was his goal after just six minutes against Sassuolo in December.
