Italians in Serie A: Giovanni Di Lorenzo stands out on Matchday 12

Napoli were held to a draw by Verona, but from another perspective, largely thanks to an outstanding performance by Giovanni Di Lorenzo, they managed to pick up their 32nd point out of the possible 36 available so far in the first 12 matchdays of Serie A. This is only the second time in the club’s history that they have achieved this feat, with the 2017/2018 season being the first. The full-back from Castelnuovo di Garfagnana was Opta's MVP on the day, combining a fine performance with his first goal in Serie A this season, which came from a first-time strike set up by his team-mate Fabian Ruiz. Five of the defender's seven Serie A goals for Napoli so far have come in home matches. Di Lorenzo made the most of his one chance, scoring with his only shot in a game in which he was the star player: the Partenopeifull-back had 91 touches, more than any other player on the pitch, and behind only Gian Marco Ferrari among Italian players on this matchday. Di Lorenzo matched his offensive display with a solid defensive performance, including four tackles (no Italian made more that day) and nine balls recovered  (among his teammates only Fabian Ruiz won more).

Giovanni Di Lorenzo has only missed seven games in the last three Serie A seasons with Napoli and has always featured in the starting XI during his 81 appearances over these three campaigns. Amongst the Italian outfield players, no one has started more games from the start of the 2019/20 season onwards, without ever being subbed off. An industrious player, who, along with Mancini, Ferrari and Ceccaroni this season, is one of only four Italian outfield players to have played all of the possible 1080 minutes. He also ranks first among all Serie A full-backs for the number of passes attempted (794) and completed (711).
