Italians in Serie A: Giacomo Raspadori stands out on matchday 21
The Sassuolo forward is the standout Italian player in the last round of the championship according to the Opta IndexWednesday, January 12, 2022
Giacomo Raspadori, MVP of matchday 21 according to the Opta Index, starred in a performance at the Castellani which saw him score two goals and display his sharpness and reliability with his constant involvement in the Neroverde's system. After scoring in the first match of the season against Verona followed by a period without too many highlights, the Neroverde talent seems to have finally blossomed at this stage of the season (with five goals and two assists in the last six league games) aided by a team that seems to be learning and adapting more and more to the style of play Dionisi wants to employ.
Raspadori's brace against Empoli was his third in Serie A (after the two he scored against AC Milan and Spezia) and he is the youngest player in the league to score at least six goals. Furthermore, three of Giacomo Raspadori's last four Serie A goals have come from outside the box: no forward has scored more goals than Raspadori from outside the box this season (Giovanni Simeone and Zlatan Ibrahimovic have also scored three).
Raspadori's performance for the full 90 minutes which he played against Empoli was characterised by his solidity and efficacy. The forward was a constant thorn in the side of the Tuscan defence both through his direct involvements (four shots, two of which were on target) and through what he created for the team, as highlighted by the three crosses made and 15 passes in the opponent's final quarter. The resourcefulness of Raspadori, capable of working both as a lone striker as well as playing between the lines as one of the Neroverde's three attacking midfielders can also be seen through his enterprise with the ball (three successful dribbles) and 61 passes made in the match.
